On this Changemaker episode of S&P Global Commodity Insights EnergyCents podcast, Hill Vaden and Samantha Humphry talk to BiogasUnite co-founder, Katrin Puetz, about the opportunities for biogas to unlock new income opportunities for small-scale producers.

We are raising!
We are currently seeking support to take the first essential steps in bringing BiogasUnite to life: the development of our digital platform. Your contribution will enable us to build the platform’s basic infrastructure and prepare for the pilot implementation. This includes registering technicians and users on the platform, providing training to biogas technicians, establishing a marketplace for biogas and bio-fertilizer, and testing the business model for biogas producers. Our funding target is €175,000.

Past Events
In December 2024, we kicked off the first BiogasUnite roadshow, starting in four major cities across Nigeria. With 120 key stakeholders in attendance, we presented our vision and gained valuable insights into the specific needs and challenges of the biogas sector in Nigeria – laying the foundation for future collaboration and impact.

Co-founders Asah and Katrin had the privilege of participating in the prestigious African Energy Week in Cape Town, thanks to the invaluable support of the African Energy Chamber. They presented the groundbreaking BiogasUnite cooking energy concept during a high-profile panel discussion on clean cooking and a deep-dive technical session. The event provided a unique platform to showcase the initiative, engage with key industry players, and connect with potential partners and investors – an important milestone on the journey to transforming the cooking energy landscape in Africa.

We received overwhelming feedback from the private biogas sector in Nairobi in December 2025! Together with country representative Caleb Wafula Wasilwa we hosted the first BiogasUnite meeting for fellow biogas technicians and companies in hashtagKenya. We started with insights from various voices in the sector about their current situations, business challenges, and aspirations. The issues shared by our Kenyan colleagues resonate with what biogas companies and entrepreneurs across the continent are experiencing. It was exciting to hear firsthand from a sector that is arguably the most developed and vibrant on the continent.

At the German-African Business Summit in Nairobi, December 2024, BiogasUnite had the honour of presenting its vision to Robert Habeck, German Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. His message was clear: “What we really need is disruption.” This is exactly what BiogasUnite is set to deliver — by transforming the clean cooking energy sector with an entrepreneurial, scalable approach. We are grateful for this opportunity to share our vision at such a high level and excited to be part of the positive disruption the world needs.

The BiogasUnite launch event in Ethiopia hosted by at Addis Ababa University (AAU) brought together representatives from the private sector, academia, and public institutions, including various ministries. The room was filled to capacity, and we had undivided attention on the key points presented regarding the current status of the biogas sector, what we've learned over the past 15 years, and how we can now create a booming sector. An incredible excitement for a new approach in the biogas sector was created, the promising income opportunities and the fairness in the sector that will inevitably follow.
